The Brief
What started as a Penn State University dance marathon with only 78 dancers back in 1973 has blossomed into the largest student-run philanthropy in the world that has raised over $254 million for over 4,800 families impacted by childhood cancer. As THON has continued to grow and evolve, it is now a yearlong effort that involves various events culminating in THON Weekend.
THON Weekend is a 46-hour-long, no-sitting, no-sleeping dance marathon to raise awareness and fundraise for children and families impacted by childhood cancer.
The Process
More than 16,500 student volunteers dedicate an average of 15 hours per week to THON related events and activities throughout the year. There are a multitude of ways for Penn State students to get involved and make a difference in the life of a child. THON Captains are hardworking and motivated leaders in the THON community. As a Captain, students take an active role in the planning of THON events throughout the year.
The Public Relations Committee is a group of students committed to spreading the mission of THON™ via media outreach, social media, and other visual mediums, such as photography, video, and graphic design.
